Bible Linguistics-13. English Bible Reading
Before entering into full-fledged Bible memorization, you need to understand the concepts of speed reading, precision reading, extensive reading, and extracting reading. Speed reading is possible only when various concepts are arranged without distraction in the head, what evidence it has phenomenal, what are the actual examples, and when all these things are filled in the head and the absolute amount overflows. It is a mistake to think that speed reading is achieved just by reading quickly. In a word, you can think of fast reading when you have accumulated more and more perusal readings and more and more extensive readings. This is because, when evidence, examples, and methods of unraveling an organized concept are arranged in the head, the contents of the book about it come in like flashes and patterns, like taking a picture at once. The fact that the contents of the book visible to the eye come in like a pattern in the head is not done by absurd methods such as eye movement or moving the right brain or left brain. It's similar to the way Go or chess masters look at the board and read the situation. They read all the meaning of each stone on the board, but they are faster than others. It is an ability embodied through unprecedented practical experience and research on cutting bones. Just as the masters understand that each stone is laid, the masters of reading are faster than others in reading and organizing the meaning of each text. It can even make a difference of 10 or 100 times.
Cognitive neurologist and child-developmentist Maryanne Wolf, in the books "The Brain to Read" (2009) and "Back to the Book" (2019), the essence of reading is "the brain that reads deeply." In order for this to be possible, ① read the entire book back and forth, ② read it part by part, but rearrange it again, ③ reorganize the related information with one's own thoughts, and ④ go through the process of comprehensively considering these contents in depth. Jeong Yak-yong (1762~1836), a Silsian scholar during the Joseon Dynasty, also wrote in a letter to his son from exile, saying, “Simply reading a book at random is no different from not reading a book even if you read it a thousand times a hundred times a day. Whenever you encounter a letter that you do not understand in the middle of reading, you should be able to understand the whole text by examining it widely and studying it in detail to uncover its roots. If you read a book like this every day, you are reading hundreds of books together. It is only through this reading that you can clearly understand the loyalty (meaning) of the book you have read.”
In relation to reading, many scholars and geniuses teach us a number of methodologies for speed reading, precise reading, extensive reading, and extracting reading. You need to take their advice selectively. However, the Bible reading we do is a textbook suitable for reading by applying all of these reading methods, and it is well worth reading. However, the Bible cannot be solved only by precise reading. Not only is the volume so large, but it is difficult for beginners to connect the contents of each volume well. Therefore, it is necessary to have a certain flow in the Bible with a memorization method by volume and chapter, and speed reading, extensive reading, extensive reading, and super reading in parallel. As for the speed reading method, you can use any of the commercially introduced speed reading methods, such as reading diagonally, reading through books, and reading in chunks. If you adhere to reading the Bible through speed reading, precise reading, extensive reading, and extracting reading in this way, you will have plenty of spiritual food in your old age and become a good textbook for teaching your descendants. “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16–17, NRSV) The Bible is the manual of life. In addition, this well-read Bible will greatly help in improving foreign language skills, another fruit of biblical linguistics. This is because if you have the ability to quickly read the Bible in a foreign language, you have a solid foundation for the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) of the language.
